- Our deepest cave, Cave István-lápai with its 250 metres depth and 4.5 kilometres length is situated in Lillafüred. This cave has not become famous due to its size or special formations but its location.
- Cave Istállós-kő located near Szilvásvárad is perhaps the most well-known amongst early man caves discovered in the mountains. Archaeological explorations revealed the world’s oldest musical instrument, the bone flute, along with arrowheads and drilled bone jewels.
- During your outings you can hear more about the precious archaeological findings and human remains, and visit interesting places such as ancient burial grounds.
- Cave Anna, found near the Waterfall of Lillafüred, has been formed in young freshwater limestone, therefore it is different from dripstone caves formed in older sea limestone. You can admire wonderful limestone formations in Cave Anna. Algae and moss strings incrusted by limestone hang down from the ceiling of the chambers. You can see petrified several thousand year-old leaves, blades of grass and tree branches. Not open all year round.
The Caves of Aggtelek National Park:
- Aggtelek’s most famous attraction is Cave Baradla. There is a short guided tour on offer, when visitors can take an hour of subterranean walk in the 1000-metre long and paved section of the cave where electric lighting is installed.
- The Vörös-tó (Lake Red) Tour in Cave Baradla. The tour takes two hours on a 2.3-kilometre section of the cave from the entrance of Lake Vörös (Red) to the exit of Jósvafő. Walking along the Brook Styx’ bed you can see Hungary’s tallest stalagmite and the largest chamber of the cave.
- The entrance to Cave Rákóczi is just outside the village of Bódvarákó. You can approach it through a mine adit. The most characteristic formations of the cave are flues reaching up high and the dissolution pockets. Besides dripstones of different colours and shapes you can see alternating bands of calcite and aragonite. Perhaps this is Hungary’s most beautiful cave which is open to visitors.
- Cave VASS Imre is supremely beautiful. You will be met by stalactites, stalagmites and columns. Flowstones hang from the ceiling and side walls like curtains. A real delicacy is offered by the sight of helictites fighting gravity. You can also see the Narancs-zuhatag (Cascade Orange) which has a unique orange colour and measures 8 metres in height.
- Cave Kossuth is known to possess highly powerful erosion formations, the route leading next to columns and crests to Lake Nagy, over which visitors pass using a wire bridge. The complete tour of the cave takes five hours and is considered to be a demanding one. Book in writing in advance.
- Cave Béke (Peace) is a so-called ‘watery cave’ (there is an active brook in it). The largest leg of the walk has to be completed wading through approximately one-metre high water. There are no paved walkways or electric lighting in the cave. The tour requires a fair amount of physical fitness.
- Cave Meteor is one of the most spectacular percolation water caves of Aggtelek National Park. This is the most physically demanding cave to visit: only after creeping and crawling among bulks, climbing ladders the visitor will reach the gigantic Titans Chamber with its enormous richness of dripstones.
